The 8200-1302 is one of several Woodward 505 digital governors that can be used to control steam turbines. The operator control panel acts as a graphical interface and keyboard, allowing the turbine to be adjusted and communicated. This can be configured via a Modbus communication port located on the device.

The 8200-1302 has multiple functions:

Automatic start sorting for hot and cold starts with temperature input option
Critical speed avoidance is realized in three speed bands
10 external alert inputs
10 external DI trip inputs
Trip indication and alarm events with relevant RTC timestamps
Two-speed and load dynamics
Peak speed indication of overspeed trip
Zero speed detection
Long range sag
Frequency dead zone
The unit also offers three normal operation modes, including configuration, operation and calibration modes.

The device includes two redundant speed inputs and can accept a magnetic pickup device, eddy current probe, or eddy current probe. It has analog inputs (8) and can be configured for any of 27 functions. The device also has an additional 20 contact inputs. The first four of these contacts are used by default to shut down, raise speed setpoints, reset and lower speed setpoints. Other options can be configured as needed. In addition, the unit has two 4-20 mA control outputs and eight Type C relay contact outputs.

The front panel of the 8200-1302 includes an emergency trip key, a backspace/delete key, a shift key, as well as the view, Mode, ESC, and Home keys. It also has navigation cross keys, soft key commands, and four leds to correlate the state of the control and hardware.
